Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

r-rated-comedy-fear-and-loathing-in-las-vegas-movie-posterAh, Fear and Loathing. This film is… strange, to say the very least. It’s a dark, strange trip of a black comedy movie, delving into the darker side of drugs. The paranoia, the strange situations that arise, the excitement- there is nothing bland or boring about Fear and Loathing. This black, black comedy stars Johny Depp as “Raoul Duke”, a drug addled writer (aren’t they all?) and reporter sent on an assignment that soon gets lost in a haze of drug after drug after drug. Johny Depp is a versatile actor, and the character he plays in this one is far removed and almost unrecognizable compared to his other roles.

It’s not exactly an easy film to watch. It’s a mess, but a mess that is worth watching. Depp has an equally, depraved accomplice in his antics, a man named “Dr. Gonzo”, who is played by Benicio del Toro. He does some, well, not so commendable things, including a lot of drugs and a lot of alcohol. The two are in search of the “American Dream”, a holy grail that many who search for end up dried and dessicated in the desserts of Vegas. Love, fidelity and the white picket fence go to Vegas to die.
If you see this looking back at you, run far, far away. You will miss out on adventures and some of the most exciting experiences of your life, but you will escape unscathed.

“Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” seems like a depressing film so far, eh? In a way, it is. On the other hand, if you want to watch a wild, self-destructive ride, the Fear and Loathing could be the comedy for you. It is rated R, most likely for the excessive quantities of drugs and other adult content, and if you are the type of person who enjoys watching other people in horrible situations, this could be the one for you. It’s a good movie, with a cult following who will probably kill me for not praising this movie unequivocally. I do like this black comedy, and I do love the acting, especially by Depp, but this is not the type of movie you watch for a nice, light time. It is the type of movie you sit down to with an empty evening and feel yourself fill with the corruption and despair that oozes from the depths of Las Vegas. Oh, and you will laugh.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is one of those movies you have to watch. Check it out yourself.
