The 40-Year Old Virgin

the-40-year-old-virging-r-rated-romantic-comedyIt might be mean to say this, but if you want to feel better about yourself, the 40-Year Old Virgin might be the comedy for you. Steve Carell is at his goofiest, most awkward best in the 40-Year Old Virgin. This is the story of one mans quest to lose his virginity, a quest that all men undergo… but most do it quite a bit earlier than Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell), who is 40 years old and still hasn’t gone all the way (not that there is anything wrong with that!)

He’s got a dead end job, enjoys nerdy hobbies, and seems quite content with his life…. except for that vague sense of loneliness that haunts him. Anyways, once some co-workers find out that he is still a virgin at 40, they make a pact to help him lose it.

All of the awkwardness of high school, instilled into a 40 year old man who it seems has given up on a basic human need means that there are some hilarious scenes and lots of laughs in this film. It’s awkward but heart warming to see how this naive individual navigates unfamiliar grounds of intimacy with women as he starts to open up his solitary life. Don’t worry, it’s not a serious film, and as you might guess from the subject matter, it features some low brow humour to keep it low key and engaging. Still, definitely a comedy to watch!

One of the greatest things about this R rated comedy movie is that the dialogue feels so real- because most of it was improvised on the spot! That means no stuffy directors and writers creating awkward dialogue and diction. If you are looking for top comedies, well the 40-year old Virgin is definitely worth a watch if you are a fan of Carell, as I most certainly am!
